OK, it's been out a long time. I had low expectations, which is always good for enjoying a flick. It wasn't great but wasn't bad. They got many characters' names right, had the 10th Cavalry going up the hill with the Rough Riders, etc.
I was surprised to find Hamilton Fish (a venerable NYC name) was one of the first killed in Cuba. There were a lot of his family with that name. It was nice to see Parker and his Gatling guns, even if they didn't get enough credit.

Two questions (not bitching, just curious):
did Wheeler really say Forrest was better? I know it's true but can't imagine Joe Wheeler admitting it.

Did the Spanish have a Maxim gun on Kettle Hill? One would think the cavalry would never have taken the place if they did.

I don't know for sure about your questions, but here's quick link on Hamilton Fish.

I just read in a NRA magazine about one of the Colt Machine Guns that was given to the Rough Riders by Sgt. William Tiffany's parents being found in a basement room in New York. He's played by James Parks in the movie. Sgt. Tiffany died of disease contracted in Cuba after his return to the States.

I also remember reading that Wheeler would refer to the Spanish as "Yankees" in the heat of battle.

I don't think the Spanish had a Maxim Machine Gun, Old Glory has a pack in their Spanish American War line that is called the "Spanish Fantasy Pack" that has a machine gun and crew.
