I'm always amused by what close captioner's type. It doesn't matter what network or channel it is, they're gonna mess up. For one thing, they're trying to type exactly what was just said. But my guess is for common words they have shortcut symbols, but names have to be spelled out or guessed at— If you heard "d-ZO-'har zar-NAH-ev" thrown at you for the first time, what would you type?
Keep in mind a captioner might also have created shortcuts for celebrity names that the system inserts with a few keystrokes— not unlike typing on an iPad and having the automatic spell checker insert "broccoli" for "bricole." |
