The series probably ruined the chances of "legitimate" series and movies being made for years. Mention "Ancient Rome" and the Spartacus turkey comes to mind and …

I can only assume many couldn't see past the blood and sex to find the really rather good series underneath. And that's understandable. There was an awful lot of both.
I thought the portrayal of the rebels as just as brutal and savage as the Romans was interesting and I much preferred that approach to the Kirk Douglas version.
Still, it could have cut down a bit on the slo-mo, sex and explosive deaths. They got in the way of some excellent acting and writing.

I really enjoyed all the series, I think 'excellent acting' is a bit optimistic though!
But, really good final episode.
