I just heard this, but he died yesterday.

That is horribly sad news! He was my absolute favorite when I was a kid. I loved him on tv, and movies too, especially in Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
I know we all must go sometime, but this is really sad.

Funny, funny man, and one who overcame manic depression.

Space Monkey12 Apr 2013 10:27 a.m. PST

I always enjoyed seeing him in things. As a kid he and Red Skelton were my favorite funnymen.
One of my favorites of his is The Loved One.

ming3112 Apr 2013 10:34 a.m. PST

Great funny man …world is less funny today . RIp

kyoteblue12 Apr 2013 10:35 a.m. PST

Loved his humor.

Great War Ace12 Apr 2013 10:41 a.m. PST

Now he can be funny on a cosmic scale….

Always liked him although much of his zaniness came from his personal problems. RIP

jpattern212 Apr 2013 10:48 a.m. PST

RIP, sir.

Streitax12 Apr 2013 10:56 a.m. PST

Most comedians are fueled by personal issues, Shagnasty, but he did have more than his fair share of problems. He was a Marine in WWII, when he came home he found his mother had gotten rid of all his stuff because she didn't think he'd survive. Nothing like a warm nurturing mother to help you develop into well balanced person.

I loved his work and I will miss him.

Brian Bronson12 Apr 2013 11:06 a.m. PST

The scene from Mad World where he destroys the gas station is one of my all-time favorite comedy scenes.

Ming is correct. The world is a much less funny place now.

The Gray Ghost12 Apr 2013 11:20 a.m. PST

A Funny man and a good serious actor, A Game of Pool is still my favorite Twilight Zone episode.
RIP

Awww, man. He was one of my most favorite comedians. In addition to his many appearances in movies and television, he also created some very memorable characters through tv commercials, such as for Hefty Trash Bags. Here's a sample of them:

It's true what Texas Jack said, but it doesn't make it any easier, especially if they're a beloved entertainer. Godspeed, Mr. Winters, and thank you VERY, very much for sharing your love of humor and for your service to our country in World War II. I salute you, sir.

jdginaz12 Apr 2013 12:40 p.m. PST

Loved watching him. Funniest improv actor ever. My favorite part of his TV show was when they would give him a box of hats, and way he would go. I agree with Space Wizard, he and Red Skelton were some of the best parts of my childhood.
RIP

Godspeed Maud Frickett

Texas Jack12 Apr 2013 12:54 p.m. PST

Yeah, for me Red Skelton, Jonathan Winters, and Bill Dana (Jose Jimenez) were the big three. Those were the days!

Ooh Rah12 Apr 2013 1:01 p.m. PST

Completely agree with all of the accolades already posted here, especially regarding his wonderful performance in the movie It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. According to Reuters, he enlisted in the US Marines at age 17 and fought in the Pacific during WW2. I never knew that. Wow, just wow.

RIP, Mr. Winters. You are already missed.

The Gas Station scene:

One of the few physical comedy sketches I have seen that makes me laugh every time I see it.

chuck05 Fezian12 Apr 2013 2:23 p.m. PST

Rest in piece sir. I too loved his performance in Mad Mad World. That whole movie is hilarious and all without toilet humor, swearing, and gratuitous nudity unlike most of todays comedies.

He was also pretty funny as Mork's son on Mork and Mindy.

Remember watching him and the other great comedians of the time, all over TV as a kid growing up in the 60s. Many, many fond memories and more than a few chuckles. Sleep softly!

The guy was a genius! Truly funny. I grew up watching him. They certainly broke the mold with him. Go make the angels laugh now.

RIP.

Rats. The world just lost a bit more happiness. Jonathan Winters and Red Skelton could make you laugh without having to resort to four letter phraseology, scatological humor, or overt sexuality. He was a follower of the late great Lord Richard Merle Buckley, AKA "God's Own Drunk". He could be great in either comedy or drama and was always entertaining. May Peace be with you Mr. Winters. Many thanks for your service to the Republic and for all the years of laughs and smiles you brought us. God Bless and Keep you good sir. May we be worthy.

Fabulous improv, Altius. We didn't have TV in our house for another four years so I missed that one….

epturner15 Apr 2013 4:17 p.m. PST

I think his best gifts were to improve and physical comedy.

You just can't teach that. What an incredible person.

RIP, and thank you for the years of laughs.

Eric
