When I disagreed with him, he was an idiot. Amazing how much smarter he was when he agreed with me. |

He and Siskel were a great team. It is sad that he had such a tough end. |

Damn. I just read two days ago that his cancer had returned, but that he planned to keepsoldiering on. RIP, sir. |

Always enjoyed the show he and Siskel had. The comments both had on films were great. |

Yeah, like JPattern2 I was just reading that his cancer was back but he sounded very optimistic and had lots of plans
I met him once at a gathering of our local film club. Him and Gene Siskel showed up and were very friendly. Back in art school he gave an amazing multi-day presentation of Citizen Kane where he'd stop and start the movie to point things out, AND let the audience point things out and ask questions. I'd liked the movie before that but never really knew how innovative it was
or how cheaply it had been made. So many creative and sneaky tricks going on there. A writer friend of mine credits Ebert with early inspiration for his career. As a High School student he wrote to Ebert about being a writer and Ebert wrote back, sent him a nice letter encouraging him to continue with his writing. Sad to see him go but thanks for all the good work and inspiration. |

Grew up watching him and Gene Siskel on the old "Sneak Previews" that PBS ran years ago. Loved their "Dog of the week" bit, later becoming their "Stinker of the week" with "Aroma, the Educated Skunk". |

I learned a lot from his writing. I've seen a lot of great movies because I knew if he championed something, it would be interesting. When I've seen a great movie, I've generally gone back to read his review, almost always after the fact, because his reviews seem like the insights of a clever, enthusiastic, dear friend. I think I will be most sad when I see the next great movie, and realize that voice is silent. |

Also, if all you know are his movie reviews, read this autobiographical "blog" posts about his childhood, as an example of how to write about the world with compassion and wonder. blogs.suntimes.com/ebert |
