We played Civilization the boardgame again this weekend, this time four players which is the player limit for this game but at the same time the something that I would consider to be the recommended number of players to make it really interesting and more dynamic. The reason you want to play four instead of just three players is that sessions often end up being either 2vs1 or you have two players fighting each other and the third is doing his thing without. Playing four players evens out the attention of everyone involved, in these larger games the map and starting positions are also such that you will have one player on each flank so there is potential danger coming from two directions, and these larger games also often auto balance themselves a bit better with two 1vs1 fights, more resource trading during the trade phase and a bit more plotting by using the culture event cards. Didn't win this one, but got the chance to nuke one of the opponents late in the game haha. You can see more pictures from our game over at my blog: link

I have never played Sid Meier's Civilization The Board Game, though I own it, and loved the first two iterations of the PC game. Possibly because I found the set up a bit fiddly, possibly because I have played several games of Avalon Hill's Civilization, enjoying, but not that much. Would hex tiles make 3 and 6 player more possible? Can you see a hex tile version? Doug |

@TheBeast Hex tiles would definitely solve the cramped 4 player restriction. But would also require reworking all the building tokens if FFG wanted a clean and symetric look, since they too are square and fit nicely into the grid areas. |

I am with Jay Arnold. I don't even recognize the new game. We use to play AH Advance Civilization with map extension with six or seven players. I don't know what your playing Anatoli but it isn't Civilization. The computer game is okay but I had much more fun with the AH board game. Looking at it on my shelf as we speak. |
