My Grandfather spent the early years of the War working at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and following the completion of BB-62 USS New Jersey, he was laid off, only to be drafted to serve in the Pacific weeks later. His ship (USS Rushmore LSD-14) survived a monsoon that sank their escort destroyers en route and later a torpedo attack (in the Philippines, I believe). After spending time in Japan during the occupation, he always spoke highly of the Japanese. He returned home after the war to finish out his career at the Navy Yard, married, and built a house by hand, despite having never lifted a hammer in his life.

He passed away last night, survived by his 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Sadly he will miss the birth of #6, my daughter, by a few short months, but I'll never forget the glowing smile he had when he saw my wife's baby bump last week.

They just don't make them like that anymore – he will be missed.

No, they don't make them like that anymore.

Sounds like a very independant man. Took care of what needed to be done.

Be proud to have had such a man in your life. He will be watching your daughter from above.

God bless and Godspeed.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Congrats on the upcoming little one. May she shine with a little bit of your grandfather's sparkle.

Thanks for the kind thoughts and prayers everyone. I'm happy to report he was buried with honors from the Navy on Monday and we were lucky enough to have a Navy bugler present playing taps. Means a lot, he was the first person to instill a love of history in me at a very young age.
