About two years ago I asked for recommendations on replacing my laptop which I had knocked off the table and cracked the display. Ended up getting the same model only an upgrade. Today I was coming in to work from the rain and had my laptop case in my Day & 1/2 bag. Sure enough I pulled it out and the case slipped from my hand (yes one handed dumb a
) and fell about 2 feet and you guessed it cracked the display. Before I hook it up to a monitor at home and download all my files I have not backed up this month I am window shopping around for a new laptop. The model (one year old FWIW) Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132 with Window 7 Home Premium operating system cost me around $450.00 USD on sale during the holidays. So now that I am in need of ANOTHER laptop what is the conventional thinking about what is good for the money. Primary use is word processing and internet research and web surfing. I do not download music or video but do go to tons of site with images. I am just sick I will have to replace it so soon but what can you do. I do not use a desk top at home. I travel too much and use the laptop all around the house. Darn government should buy as I was traveling back and forth using it for work anyway but figure the odds. VR James Mattes |

The Panasonic Toughbook's are awesome laptops, I am using one right now that I have had for 5 years. They are designed to be dropped from a height of 3 feet, and survive intact. They have large screens, and even better, a built in HANDLE, so you can carry them one handed. The bad news is that they are going to cost you. The old models run you $1,000 USD, and new ones run you $3,000. USD |

So, now that others have given you "good" advice, we need to clear something up
You have a "Day & 1/2 bag"? Is that like a European Man Purse? Do we need to re-evaluate your man-card? |

Maybe get one with a two year accidental damage warranty. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |

Now be nice a Day 2/3 bag is good when you have "Kit" you have to carry. Backpacks with several compartments for carry plus keeping all working doc and forms needed in the course of my day bouncing from one clinic in the hospital to others is helpful. VR James Mattes |

iPad with bluetooth keyboard. More portable, does everything you want it to do and more, and you are less likely to drop it because it is ultra-light. |

Yes I wish I was more well versed with what is out there and if it would meet my needs. I really like the concept but not sold on it would work for what I do on a regular basis. VR James Mattes |
