His beliefs in many areas were almost diametrically opposed to my own, but damned if he didn't surprise and impress me with his progressive positions on condoms, sex education, AIDS, smoking, and other health issues.

RIP, sir, and well done.

It was his "progressive" opinions that made me dislike him. I give him respect for for pushing his ideas although his behavior radically changed the role of the Surgeon General.

Living to 96 seems a great way for a former SG to say, 'See, I was right.'

RIP Sir.

A good doctor, a strong leader, and an uncomfortable example for the press that you can't necessarily attribute what one person says to an entire group of people.

Perhaps his greatest strength was that while he had his ideals and own moral sense about things he was also a pragmatist. Both ideological sides often forget the important power of practicality. Dr Koop didn't. BRAVO ZULU Dr. Koop. Godspeed, Fair Winds and may we be worthy.

The man never let his beliefs get in the way of getting the job done. He will be missed.

We need more people in power that can do that.
