"It's lovely to get a laugh. It's the best thing in the world" "They simply don't write funny stuff anymore," he once said. "A lot of it is very depressing. Or violent. Or both." "The ciggies got me. I didn't think it would go quite as badly as it has. It's a , but there it is. I used to love smoking." |

How odd, I don't recall ever seeing/hearing him in anything. He played the voice of "Fiver" in Watership Down, but I didn't have any idea who did the voices for that animated film. I never saw a single episode of "The Good Life" that I recall either. Now, something just popped into my memory: I'm sure I've seen him in Dr Who, didn't he play the ruler/building super in that episode "Paradise Towers" or something of the sort? You know, the one that had the two old biddies who were cannibals, and were setting up to eat Perri Brown (iirc), but the entire complex was actually taken over by a sentient climate control system or something of the sort. Briers, if it was he, said at one point, "Don't worry Daddy will get you something to eat!", because the "system" kept growling in a sepulchral tone that shook the rafters, "HUNGRY!" Does that ring a bell? I think it was Briers who was "Daddy". Anyway, his was the funniest part in that Dr Who episode

I think I remember him most as Bardolph in Henry V and Don Leonarto in Much Ado ABout Nothing. It looks like he worked with Branagh on a number of things. David S. |

I knew him first from 'The Good Life', which my inner hippy loved. Then I began noticing him in other things and was always cheered by his presence. Sad to see him go but so glad to have had him around. |
