Ran across this sad biot of news earlier today. link Godspeed and Fair Winds Your Honor. As a lifelong Midwesterner, you made me think of New York as what it had been and could be again. |

I always liked him. My favorite quote came after he was defeated in an election: "The people have spoken. Now they must be punished." |

Nothing he wouldn't do for "his city". Talked to him outside of Penn Station, years ago, where a small tourist booth/kiosk had been placed. He was there for hours – giving directions, handing out tourist pamphlets, posing for pictures – didn't stop talking, or moving, for hours. |

Ed Koch was the embodiment of New York City. His love for "his city" knew no bounds, and it certainly showed. Godspeed, Mayor, and thank you very, very much for your service to your city and your service to our country in World War II. I salute you, sir. |

RIP
He seemed like a person who could connect with folks and wasn't aloof |

Whatever one thought of his politics, he was a straight forward guy. Seems he always said it the way he saw it. Extremely admirable man. We are diminished. RIP |

"Met" him twice
I was standing on the ticket holder's line outside a Manhattan theater showing "The Elephant Man". Mayor Koch came out from the theater. His limo was right by where I was standing and as he brushed by I asked him "how ya doing?"
He shot me a "you schmuck" sort of look while his HUGE (NYPD?) bodyguard (the guy must have been nearly 6.5-7 ft. tall
by the way, Koch was no slouch in the height department either) pushed me aside with his outstretched hand. Kinda fun at the time
2nd time I met Koch up close he was just as "abrasive". Never mind
It seems like the only *GOOD* Mayors of the big apple are egotistical "s.o.b's". Maybe that's what the city needs. Anyway, Koch "was" a character AND a Vet! RIP, yer Honor! |
