We've recently upgraded the oldest kid's laptop. She had passworded her old laptop and had deleted the Windows password so we could use her old computer, but it has a password that comes up before it even loads Windows. It' her password (she tested it and was able to get past it). How do I get rid of that?

That would be a BIOS password. When the computer is first starting up, there should be a message to press a particular key to enter Setup. Do that, and the option to clear/change that password will be in there somewhere. I would be more specific but the details vary quite a bit.

I thought as much. As a rhetorical question, why did she set up a BIOS password? My oldest works in strange and mysterious ways. I'll give it a try, Thanks!

Well, I can't seem to get into the BIOS to delete the password. The system ignores me and goes straight to the password prompt.

Password first then BIOS. If it was BIOS first, why would you even bother setting up a password!? grin

You setup a BIOS password to keep someone from getting into your computer quickly. However, it is easy enough to short out the BIOS (essentially resetting it to factory defaults as in 'no password') and make the thing run. The BIOS password is definitely a relic from days gone by.

- That's why you have a BIOS password. 80% of users don't even know what a BIOS password is, let alone how to get around one.

How many even know what the BIOS is?
