I must be a bad man. Whenever I hear that some old celebrity has died, my first reaction is "Oh, is he/she still alive?" |
Doms Decals | 03 Jan 2013 2:42 a.m. PST |
It's a common enough reaction – if we only know someone as a "celebrity" they disappear from our lives when they stop doing whatever it is we know them for. Thus, unless they basically keep working until they drop, they've long since dropped off of most people's radar when they actually shuffle off of this mortal coil, as it were. "I haven't heard anything about them for years, so kind of assumed they were gone already" is therefore a pretty understandable thought. |

I have a similar reaction, but usually I also seem to remember that their passing away was somehow announced some years ago. |

I totally missed Larry Hagman. |

I totally missed Larry Hagman. One of the things that technology has done for us is allow us to see our favorite stars pretty much any time we want. Want to see Larry Hagman? Go watch a re-run of Dallas. Even better. Watch I Dream of Genie. You get to see Larry AND the lovely Barbara Eden. It doesn't bring them back but celebs do get the added perk of being immortalized in film. |

My wife and I were stunned to learn that former star basketball player Dwayne Schintzius had died (age 43). When we were at Vandy, he was the big rival player (Florida) that the entire campus hated. Although we shouted and yelled and booed him on the wood, that was all just sports nonsense. I'm saddened to see his life cut short. |

I think this first occurred to me when Lillian Gish died at the age of 104. |

Yeah, Lillian Gish got me too. But really, who would have thunk it? I wonder if there are any other silent screen babes still walking this earth. |

Dorothy Provine, totally shocked to learn she died only three years ago (on the 25th of this month). I thought she was dead a long time ago – because of something I misheard Edie Adams say on the commentary to my old VHS copy of MMMMW. I only found out that Dorothy lived till recently because I went on IMDb and looked up It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (because Johnathan Winters passed)
