As all the radio stations are doing their "Top [n=station frequency] Songs of 2012" lists, and getting it WRONG (as usual), I boldly offer up the correct answers.

New Ceremony by Dry the River

#1 hands down. Great hooks, poetic lyrics. My current theme song.

Simple Song by The Shins
YouTube link
A close second. A great songwriter's homage to his wife.

Tell Me A Taleby Michael Kiwanuka
YouTube link
First time I heard this, I thought it was from around 1972.

I'm Not Talking by A.C. Newman
YouTube link
I find the melody irresistibly haunting.

Bottom of the River by Delta Rae

Best new spiritual/field song of the last 100 years?

California by Delta Spirit

The pain of knowing someone is better without you.

The Pit by Silversun Pickups

Shades of New Order, sort of. Great running song.

And your picks are…?

I don't think I can add too much for 2012 itself, I'm kinda slow on trends when it comes to music, but I'll add some from my favourite artists discovered this year

Rodrigo y Gabriela, Hanuman
YouTube link
The best new sound I have heard in years, and absolutely amazing guitar work. It's kinda a mix between mexican/ metal/flamenco. Worth discovering all their work. (I'd love to hear what others think about them)

Lion's Roar by First Aid Kit

Folky duo from Sweden

the A-Team by Ed Sheeran

ok, I'm slow

The Beards – You Should Consider Having Sex With a Bearded Man
YouTube link
I love these guys, all their songs are about beards

Canarios – Jordi Savall – Ostinato – Diego Velázquez.

So I finally found a genre of "classical' I like – Spanish Baroque. It makes my soul dance.

C.W. Stoneking – Seven Nation Army
YouTube link
I'm not even sure what you call his music, roots blues? This is a cover, but indicative of his other work

And "Like a version" one of our radio stations has been running this for years now, some of the covers are spectacular, and its where I found C.W. Stoneking above. I've just included a couple of my favoutites

Adalita – Burning up
YouTube link

The Kooks – Kids
YouTube link

The Herd – he was only 19

Usually I would hate any cover of this, especially in this style, but I think they capture how was is to the 19 year olds of today, by changing the lyrics slightly, and musically as well.

I hope lots of you guys add, I've missed long music threads on TMP, its how I have found some really amazing music

Nice picks Mrs.! First Aid Kit and Ed Sheeran get a lot of play on my favorite alt station. Loved the Kooks covering MGMT!

Rodrigo Y Gabriela are phenomenal. I nearly wore out my copy of "Tamacun", which I didn't think was possible with a CD.

If I had to list one it would be Comanche by In This Moment.

Goodness I am old.

You're never too old for good music. I'm 43. My high school and college years were a golden age for alternative music, and I was fortunate that we had a great local station that exposed me to a lot of brilliant stuff. Now, through the glory and might of the interwebs, it's even easier to find.

AND, I can't believe I forgot these crazy kids from Bawlmer

Well I´m 50 and still listen to the rock I listened to when I was 17. Although I do love current country singers like my boy Lyle Lovett. And don´t tell anyone, but I like Snoop Dogg.

Thanks for making me feel even more "out of it." I not only had not heard the songs, I've never heard of ANY of the musicians. Back to Bach for me.

After seeing their Hanuman video on TV I asked for and received two of their CDs last Christmas. I agree, absolutely amazing guitar work.
