Looking for a Tablet for my Mother in Law, and these seem to be the options (We don't love her enough to spring for an iPad). Any opinions on these two? She would mostly check stock quotes and play some simple games (she loves playing slots on my wife's iPad) My kids would probably use it occasionally to play games as well (Angry birds, etc.) |

I have a nexus and absolutely love it, best tablet I own. The Kindle Fire is customised by Amazon and is useful if she is going to read books from Amazon. It is probably an easier interface to use for those who know little about technology. The Nexus on the other hand will do what the Kindle does and more. Neither is better than the other they just do things differently. The best way to decide is watch a few YouTube reviews to help with your choice. |

I found my K-Fire to be too limited by Amazon's restrictions, so I rooted it and sideloaded the Google Play store. It's more functional now, but I still find it lacking next to the Nexus 7's specs -- no cameras, mic, GPS, physical volume buttons, heavier, thicker, etc. I enjoy having it, but if something happened to it, I would replace it with the Nexus. |

I bought a cheap Android tablet for £80.00 GBP and it is fantastic. Tons of free Apps on Google play (watch out for ads though!) and cheap enough for me not to worry too much when the girls get hold of it. Another option to consider. |

I got a Fire HD from my girlfriend for christmas. Pro – its good, solidly built, very clear screen, simple to operate, good kindle e book deals, everything "idiot proof" nice on off switch, good volume controls, good usb cable slot, HDMI cable so you can show images on your TV. Cons Well, its not an I pad, and it is designed as a limited internet experience, it has to have wi fi to connect, no GPS etc etc etc. I like My HD fire – it might not be perfect but it is pretty good at what it does. |

My wife has the Nexus and is extremely pleased. Can do what the Kindle does plus much much more. She did tons of research and then chose it over the kindle/iPad. |

Thanks! Of course, My wife went out to look and thinks the screens are too small, so now we are looking at the 10" Samsung Galaxy. Office Depot has it on sale for $299 USD, so looks like I am going to pick one up

If you go the cheap tablet route, make sure it is supported by Google Play first! My daughter won a Kyros tablet in a raffle. I cannot use it with Google play. It is not on their list of supported tablets. It does work with the Aamazon APPs store though, remarkably. I'll agree with the comparisons though. if it is going to be used primarily with Amazon (not just reading mind you!) go with the Fire HD. Otherwise, I'd go with the Nexus. |

Bit late to the party, but I posted a review of the Kindle Fire HD on my personal blog a while back: link Short form, it's a nice tablet, but it has some practical issues. |

You might find the nook HD to be a satisfactory equivelant |
