I'm trying to move my hosted (shared hosting) to a VPS both provided by 123reg. Their help documents are either no use or totally confusing. ie too basic,or too complicated. I think i need to set the DNS settings on my domain to point to the new VPS, but not entirely sure. Can anyone help. |

You can normally use any DNS server out there. Your domain settings are governed by the server that holds the statement of authority (SOA) which is usually the company you registered though. If you make a change (new or different IP for instance) this may take a little time to propagate through the internet. If you are pointed to your registrars DNS server, this change will seem immediate to you. Someone using another DNS server might not see the change for 24-72 hours. Probably less depending on the time to live (TTL) settings on the DNS server you are using. |
