Hi to all American TMPers, I was wondering if you have Northern Soul in the States, I am aware that this is where it comes form but in the U.K it has a large cult following, I was curious to know if there was anything similar in the U.S. Thanks for any replies…CH.

No.

For American readers, the strange and unexpected phenomenon of Northern Soul involves people from northern England gathering to dance to deliberately obscure R&B dance records from the 60s (into the early seventies), often for marathon bouts at a time. In its 1970s prime, Northern Soul was associated with extremely baggy trousers, now regretted.

This is the first time I have ever heard of it…

I didn't know this was a "thing" but it's cool!

BTW, I liked this one from your link: YouTube link

Thats excellent MJS, is this still available, if so what label is it on. Actually it was a pretty good summing up of Northern soul, I used to have a pair of 42inch bottom bags, my gran thought that they were a skirt. But come on, time to confess, how come you know so much about Northern England. All the best to all….CH.

MJS : in your summary haven't you overlooked the significant role of amphetamines in enabling the all-nighters ?

@Cat Herder, Los Angeles has a very active Northern Soul scene. Look up the club "Soulside" on Google or Facebook. My buddy runs it.

I prefer Skinhead-Reggae to N.S. but Soulside is still a fun club. You get a nice mix of punx, skins & mods.
