Next week I'll be staying in Heidelberg for about a week. My wife is attending a conference and I will be tending our 7 month old daughter. I'm looking for interesting, historical, or scenic things to see in the area, as I will be taking the kid out for 2 or 3 hours at a time. I was in Heidelberg briefly as a teenager – I remember going to the castle but not much else.

Do you have any suggestions for what a historian and gamer should visit? I will have a car and could travel no more than an hour to visit things (time spent in transit means less time at destination, but it can be balanced). Needs to be baby-friendly.

We have a day or two at the end to make our way back to Frankfurt. What "Must See" spots are between the two?

The Sinsheim Auto and Technik Museum is only 22kms from Heidelberg. While mainly a transport museums, it does have some excellent military equipment displays.

Ah yes, I forgot his convent school was just outside Heidelberg. If I'm carrying a baby around with me I should be all set for home economics!

One of my interests is the 30 Years War, in which Heidelberg was certainly important. However, the battle at Heidelberg was mostly the town getting flattend by artillery so not the greatest tour. But Mingolsheim and Wimpfen are nearby. I don't know if there is much to see (beyond a plaque at Mingolsheim). But Bad Wimpfen looks like a lovely old town with medieval buildings so is probably worth a stop.
