I know web browsers have updates every couple of weeks, but the Java updates (win 7 sez "Java wants to update") just about every day of the week!!! Java people, I'm talking to you! Start hiring people who know what they are doing! Thank you. -- Tim |

Time to turn Java off. Java is quite possibly the biggest security hole in any computer system. My guess is you're being asked to update security patch after security patch as the hackers and crackers keep finding new ways to infiltrate Java. Either that, or you've already been compromised and the "Java" updates you're being asked to make are faked, asking for authorization for what is really a trojan horse. That's a worst case scenario, and it's probably not what's going on, but keep your eyes open and know where you're going before you click "Update." By the way, the security problem is Java, not Javascript. Most websites today are switching to Javascript, so Java is thankfully on its way out. Now, if we can only do the same for Flash

Maybe that's the reason Java & Flash are not supported on the iPad. |

Not the reason. They aren't supported because they aren't controlled by Apple. BTW – Java is going strong for web development. It's all about the stuff on the server side. Java code on the server is what is generating that HTML/JavaScript that gets delivered to the browser. Applets are the problem and aren't what most sites use. So Parzival is right but paints with too broad a brush. |

"My guess is you're being asked to update security patch after security patch as the hackers and crackers keep finding new ways to infiltrate Java." Some of the recent releases have been a face-palm. There's been a spate of emergency fixes. |

Thanks for your thoughts folks. Can you actually turn off java without uninstalling it? One other thing that drives me nuts, and I think some of you folks are network admins or worked in that area, is locked down computers in a work environment such that there's all these notifications for java (mostly) and other updates popping up but the user can't do anything. I have admin privileges myself on my own machine, but the supervisors who use the maintenance software I manage are plagued with this sort of BS and it's just freaking crazy. -- Tim |
