My son and I both have Kodak Office Hero 6.1 printers. I have been highly complimentary of the printer and the low cost ink cartridges, especially the generic ones. Well a couple of days ago son called to ask for my help because his printer was not recognizing the black ink cart. We tried troubleshooting but could not figure out what was going on. Tonight I needed to change the black and color ink carts in my printer and lo and behold I got the same error message. We both had updated the firmware a couple of weeks ago and apparently the new firmware will not recognize generic cartridges. I will be off to Officemax tomorrow to get Kodak brand ink and see if that fixes the problem. The printer is still a great one, and Kodak still has cheaper ink than the others but this really whizzes me off.

At least warn a guy.

Typically the printer is considered a device that's sold cheap to get you to buy ink… and they want you to buy _their_ ink.

I was tempted by the 'cheaper ink' that Kodak advertise, but I've heard the quality isn't as good – colours don't have the richness etc.

My Kodak printer runs through ink like a hobo through sterno, so the savings is an illusion . . .

I'll be replacing it soon and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I haven't seen a home printer yet (especially one under $150 USD) that didn't have a hefty per page cost. The Kodaks usually come off pretty well in those comparisons. Let us know what you find that does better as we all have the same need.

Forgot to add regarding color richness. When I scan in a photo and then print it, I can't tell the difference between the original and the copy. Of course we're using the photo paper but that's first hand experience.

Laser printer. Yep, that's the way to roll.

I've been under the impression you won't get comparable color quality from a laser unless you are willing to spend a grand. That might not be important to some but it is at our house.

Update:
Went and bought Kodak brand ink and it is sailing along like new.
