The Telegraph is reporting that Sir John Keegan has died at the age of 78.

I first read, The Face of Battle back in 1986. It remains one of the best military history books I have ever read.

kallman02 Aug 2012 12:53 p.m. PST

A tremendous loss to the study of history. Rest well sir you taught me so much through your writing.

A true scholar.

RIP

Mapleleaf02 Aug 2012 3:10 p.m. PST

Not only a great scholar but a great writer as well. His Face of Battle did much to popularize the study of Military History

Face of Battle was a terrific book. It did a lot to revitalize military history in the current era. I've enjoyed many of his other books but none as much as F o B. Just recently read his history of WW I and found it quite insightful, particularly about the naval aspects. I'm sorry to her of his passing. RIP

RIP good Sir, and thank you for all the hours of enjoyment.

Such a good historian, who could write in a style to keep one riveted.

Texas Jack02 Aug 2012 4:55 p.m. PST

Wow, what sad news. What can you say? He was a remarkable combination of great historian and great writer. To say he will be missed is a gross understatement.

RIP .. I read a few of his book, but it was years ago. Sad to hear the news.

Ed Mohrmann02 Aug 2012 7:57 p.m. PST

A LOSS. His book on the ACW is superb (not to belittle
his other books).

RIP, Sir John.

Tacitus02 Aug 2012 11:23 p.m. PST

When I read obituaries, I usually mourn for the loss the families feel and look back at their accomplishments. For this one, i am selfish. I mourn for my loss. His works inspired me to become a better student, finish my degrees, and start teaching. RIP John Keegan.

Well said Tacitus!

Tom Bryant03 Aug 2012 5:14 a.m. PST

Tacitus, that is the best eulogy and gretaest honor any man can give another. Godspeed and Fair Winds Sir John. Thank you.

"The face of Battle" and "The mask of command" can, without hyperbole, be said to have been the start of modern military history – trying to go beyond the flags, the heroes and the fetichising of uniforms, badges, medals and particular equipment.

Did us all a great service – this is a loss indeed.

It's a very good read.

R.I.P.

dandiggler03 Aug 2012 11:06 a.m. PST

RIP, I've read a number of his books, and "The Second World War" was one of my college textbooks. He will be missed.

Mrs Pumblechook04 Aug 2012 8:11 a.m. PST

He was a great historian. Except for one book where he said as women couldn't fight the Soviet claims of woman soldiers during WW2 had to be exaggeration and propaganda.

Trajanus17 Aug 2012 6:42 a.m. PST

This one slipped under the radar I don't recall a thing about it on UK media! (I don't get the Telegraph)

If he wrote only one book The Face of Battle would be his memorial. I've just started reading Adrian Goldsworthy's "The Roman Army at War, 100 BC-AD 200" which he based on his PhD thesis and in it he says how much Keegan influenced this work.

I've seen many other citations similar to this and the book completely changed the way I read history too.

Many Thanks
