Doh! Hot on the heels of one of my hard drives going into a busy state (waiting for parts from Bulgaris to fix this – really) my Kindle 3 locked up. I think it was trying to reboot, on low power, and then got itself into a state.

It was frozen having half refreshed the screen, but with everything very dark. After recharging it overnight, I came back to see the screen lighter (like normal) but stuck on the boot up.

I tried the usual thing of sliding the power button for over a minute, about a dozen times. But no joy.

Very annoying. I'm in Bangladesh, and not back in the UK till March. So I'll probably have to open it here and hit the internal reset switch, and try taking out the battery if that doesn't work.

Sorry for your trouble Chortle. I was going to suggest holding the power button in for 15-30 seconds until it shuts off. Sounds like you already did that.

This thread suggests a hard reset after a full charge should do the trick. Other stuff in there as well about upgrading to 3.03 of the OS.

Mine died last month. And since it was past warranty….damn. I'm sure I'll get another one, just so I'll be able to access all those books I purchased. The Kindle 3 enabled me to read 42 books a year, when I usually average 15-20.

Not a day passed for over a year when I did not use it for reading or surfing the internets. Maybe excessive use killed it? The free 3G (not available on new Kindles except for downloading) definitely postponed me joining the ranks of smart phone owners, which I hope to rectify this month.

Try taking out the battery then holding the power button down for a bit. That should drain any capacitors and allow a fresh restart.

I have heard that if you call them even if it isn't under warranty they may still replace it OR give you a great deal on a new one.

Thanks,

John

Mine is still under warranty. They would probably replace it when I get back to the UK, if I contacted them now and told them it was not responding. But I'm going to open it up and try to fix it myself, because I don't want to wait.

It is a great device. I also have a Samsung Galaxy tab, which I use for viewing things like Battle Games, which is in colour. But the Kindle is nice for black and white.
