My Keeshond turned 16 years old on Friday and, despite her years and arthritic hip problems, she still showed a zest for life and its simple pleasures:

Unfortunately, in less than two days of her birthday, her congestive heart began filling her lungs with fluid. That lead to a lung infection. Because she never complained out loud for anything, we had no clue until she was already coughing blood. That was 2 a.m. Sunday morning. By 7 a.m. she lost her battle.

In my adult years, aside from my wife, I don't think I ever shared so much time with another living thing. Though I still have an 11-year old Border Collie and a 2-year old brindle Lab mix, both whom I love very much, losing my 16-year old girl has left a huge void.

My ribs and chest ache from all the crying I've done these two days. It wasn't until now that I was able to sit down and share with you guys.

To my Kiwi. My sweet and gentle little princess. I miss you terribly.

My thoughts are with you. I lost my English Springer Spaniel "Archie" just after Christmas and it was like losing a limb.

I just had to put down my big chow/lab mix a month or so ago, so I am with you, brother. It's tough to go through it, and it still hurts.

Dogs belong in Heaven a lot more than some people I could mention.

Sincere condolences CC. I have vowed to not have a dog again as I could not go through the heart of losing another one. My last one died in my arms, and only let himself go when we had to lie to him and tell him my mother would be fine (unfotunately he big C got her). He was such a member of the family and knew something was wrong with her. Am in tears now thinking of he loss of them both, and it was over 6 years ago :-(

True condolences, Dan. I've lost a number of companions over the years, and it never gets any easier. Just like an Irish wake, tell each other stories of the good times, and you'll get through it.

Oh my. I know the pain. It is deep but lessens. God Bless you for loving her and taking care of her all these years. She was a blessing in your care for a while – a nice long while.

I lost my 16 year old Dalmatian Sparks in January.

I thought we had lost our 13 year old Basset last year. As last ditch effort they were doing exploratory surgery to see if they could find cause of his stomach distress. If they found nothing then they were going to put him down. I just couldn't stop crying – damn that hurt so bad. Fortunately they found he had swalloed a chunk of pine bark mulch and that was the source of obstruction.
It is so hard to loose our animal friends. Try to remember the good times and I hope time will make it hurt less.

Sorry for your loss.
My Pepper makes my life an enjoyable complication grin so I just imagine how much of a void you have without your Kiwi there anymore.

Very sorry for your loss, Dan.

My Dad finally had to put down his 16 year old Aussie Shepherd about a month ago and he was devastated, so I can relate.

Sorry for your loss, dogs really are the best people in the world, I've met lots of people I don't like, I've never met a dog I didn't like.

We have almost lost our dachund 3 times in her 13 year life.
I've lost two dogs so far in my life and I still miss them, even tho it's been 11 years sice we lost the last one.

Tressure your memories.

Caesar01 Jun 2012 1:45 p.m. PST

So sorry to hear this Dan. I know losing a friend like that is like having part of your heart ripped out.
But the only thing we can do is love them and get loved back ten times as much.

herkybird Supporting Member of TMP06 Jun 2012 11:51 a.m. PST

I am so very sorry! – I cannot say anything sensible to make your feelings of loss less. Time will heal.
Good dog, sleep well.
