There are horror games, and there are games with horror elements in them. I prefer the later as it always seem to create a sudden twist to the story. I listed a few of the memorable games and moments on my blog. Including the creepy Nurse Edna chasing you in the old LucasArts adventure game "Maniac Mansion", the mind numbing helplessness in "Amnesia the Dark Descent", chase sequence to where you flee from the inbred Innsmouth villagers in Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the Earth and a few others. Check it out and list your own favorite scary games/moments :-) link

Haha! Got to love the "unexpected" scary moments :D Children are always creepy, just look at FEAR, also brings back memories of the old RPG called "Sanitarium" and the twisted child characters you encountered. |

I have 3 moments I really remember well
1 – Playing Hexen at like 2am and I climbing up a large stairway around a tower? I hear chanting and music and nothing is attacking me as I climb it. I am on edge waiting for the attack and all of the sudden a floating monk thing pop up right in front of me – made me jump. 2 – more recently playing Minecraft I was deep in a ground and I could hear zombie moans all around me. I was running out of torches and found a patch of diamonds. I went to climb up into the cavern mouth to get to them just out of my light and a zombie popped out of the dark making me about drop my laptop. 3 – I am not one to jump at the scripted scary stuff but there was this game where you had to take pictures of ghosts in a Asian village, forget its name, but I found myself getting jumpy in that game a lot.(I also played in the dark only with it with surround sound on) It was subtle but freaky when you would enter a building and a ghost would walk across a door way down the hallway and you knew that is where you needed to go. It was the unknown factor that creeps me out more than anything else. |

Along the same lines as Alien vs Predator, the Space Hulk PC game definitely had its moments when you played with the lights out and the sound up! |

Back in the day that the first Doom demo came out, first run through, we were running the program after hours at work, lights off, our phones on conference call, and we are in different rooms. At one point, one guy (Chris) is ahead scouting and we are coming up behind, suddenly (and everyone will know when/where when I describe this) the lights go out in the game, and Chris starts screaming "Their coming out of the walls! Their coming out of the walls! My friend and I are shouting, at the top of our lungs, "Chris! Are you alright? Chris!" We both are totally freaked out
At which point, Chris in a normal tone of voice, is saying "Give me minute, I've coming back from the respawn point." My friend and I totally lost it. When he started screaming we were completely lost in the game. Later, my friend and I talked how we both totally lost our suspension of disbelief; it was so intense that we reacted as if it was real. I've never had that happen in a game before or since. |

Hmmm
There are moments in Myst and Riven that are suitably creepy, although "atmospheric" might be a better word
Especially as you discover the characters' darker secrets. I can't really think of a game that otherwise scared me
Although the height sequences in Tomb Raider II in the chandelier room triggered my vertigo
and I don't like sharks
Though I'm certain there was some game I played late at night once that had me hearing noises
Can't recall the name. |

System Shock 2 in the dark! One of the cyber-beeeatches came up and screamed in my ear as I was trying to open a safe. The hair stood up on my arms! |

At times, Left 4 Dead – when you are low on ammo and the tank is incoming. AVP – the original one, played in the dark, everyone with headsets on. |

Oddly enough, I've found that playing Starcraft against the Zergs will cause the hair on my arms to stand up, especially later in the evening when everyone else in the house is in bed :) |
