I now have a dual boot machine. Windows and Ubuntu Linux. The goal is to get away from Windows all together. So far this little experiment is going well.

I can print on my Konica Magicolor 2400W printer. Check!

My Logitech QuickCam Orbit AF works with Skype for Linux. Check!

Played Battlefield Academy through WINE. Check!

I need to make sure that Paintshop Pro (my favorite graphics program) works through WINE. There are also a couple of other games I'd like to play. Once these problems are solved, I will probably get away from everyone's favorite 'Virus Runtime Environment" for good!

Well, I did spill a glass near my computer the other day. No lie. Linda told me to turn the volume down and as I reached for it, over went my glass of red. grin

However, WINE is the windows program executor. winehq.org

Anarchy Online runs better through Wine that it does natively. So weird.

Previous versions of Ubuntu ran OK on my machines but the last version I have found very troublesome.

Linux Mint which is a fork of Ubuntu works much better…

…and if you need an excuse to try Linux look at whats in store for Windows 8 desktop

I am running 11.04 (the latest) and it seems to do pretty well. One thing I did do (strangely as I did with windows XP) is go back to the "Classic Desktop" as I did not "get" what the new desktop was all about. Universally reviled in my office in fact.

So how do you like Mint Pete? I've heard of it but know not too much about it other than it is another flavor of Ubuntu. Other than it running well on your desktop, what is special and different than the current version of Ubuntu?

Seriously, why do operating systems need to change? Other than for the money, I mean. Christ

I love Mint and it comes pre-installed with all the DVD and MP3 codecs. But as everything else in life its down to personal choice.

Kind of a good thing really. Never understood why the various distros could not get that right! I do this for a living so adding the various items is not an issue but it is still a fine and compelling reason to go that way.
