I am off to Munich for work next week.

I would welcome any suggestions as to what to see or visit.

I will not have much time and be limited to public transport.

Also, my German is effectively none existant.

It is hard to chose, Munich is a very rich city

Those I would certainly revisit. And link
if you have time.
Come prepared, learn all the routes and lines in advance. I could rarely find someone who spoke English, even among museum staff.

For my money, this is one of the best attractions near Munich and perhaps in all of Europe -- iconic

Hofbrau haus is a must. If you're in the city on Sunday morning, hit Schneider Weisse. The Weisswurst is fantastic. but get there early, they stop selling it at noon.

Odeonsplatz and Feldherrenhalle are interesting, from a historical perspective, as the terminus of the Beer Hall Putsch. Check out Shirker's Alley while there.

If you like Old Masters, you must see Die Alte Pinakothek. Absolutely superb.

The Wittelsbach Palace is also exceptional. I went in expecting "nice" and was really overwhelmed. Wargaming bonus: if you're at all interested in the Bavarian Army, they have more paintings than you can shake a Raupenhelm at. I did not know this prior to my visit and was very pleasantly surprised!

Thank you everyone.

I will be staying here

bildungszentrum-freising.de

Which I believe is some distance from Munich.

John the Confused25 Sep 2011 3:27 a.m. PST

I am back. Unfortunately I did not get to see anything.

I did get to the Oktoberfest and I did drink beer.

I stayed at Frising which is a very nice town.
