I'm off to see my family in the UK this weekend, and part of my time will be spent at my (rich, successful) cousin's C15th vicarage near Minehead in Somerset. Medieval with modern plumbing. Sir Francis Drake signed his wedding banns there. I've got the usual list of things to do in the West Country, but anyone got any great, oddball little places to visit? Wargames shops? Book shops? |

Lucky you, sir. Here's to mild weather and strong drink on your journey! |

Is it too late in the season to raid Cornwall? |

Sounds like fun – have a great trip. You and your wife deserve some R&R. |

If you're in Minehead, then a day on the West Somerset Railway is probably in order. |

Arr! Sorry, I had to say that. Railways are always good. |

I've been holidaying that way for about 30 years now – Timberscombe round the back of Dunster which is right next door to Minehead. The railway is decent – there is the castle at Dunster. Exmoor Zoo is pretty good these days now it has expanded. You can reach Tintagel and Boscastle in a daytrip if you are prepared to drive for 2 hours. Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole are about an hour away butpoossibly on your list already. For gaming stuff Great Torrington and its civil war stuff is about an hour away (plus Dartington Crystal as a trade off while you do the 1664 stuff). Oh and the Cobbaton Combat Collection is that way as well. |
