If you had 11 days to split between these two would you go for 6 in stockholm and 5 in oslo or 5 in stockholm and 6 in oslo ? Let's say for a family holiday so not exclusilvely to be decided by gaming / military sites (although castles and armoury museums I can usually get away with !). And, related – Vasamuseet or Vikingskipshuset ? Or Vasamuseet och Vikingskipshuset ? Och – how's a guy who can say "yes", "no", "thanks", "where are the aspirin ?" and "reindeer steak" in Swedish going to manage in Norway ? Are Norwegians English language speakers to the same level as Swedes (the latter frequently correct my grammer
.) ? |

Norwegians speak almost as good English as we do here in Sweden. (But their accent is funnier, even when they speak norwegian ;-) ) I'd say Stockholm is nicer than Oslo. For the food if nothing else. The nature outside Oslo is awesome, though. And definitely Vikingskipshuset. 'Ja', 'nej', and 'tack' sound the same in Norwegian, but they spell it wrong. Aspirin is 'skallebankspiller' in Old Norse, however, so you might want to stay away from that. |

Thanks. One of our guidebooks lists the "must sees" for each museum / tourist site. It says of Vasamuseet that "you shouldn't miss – the figurehead and the stern". If we do go I'll just close my eyes as we walk around the rest of the ship as it isn't really worth seeing

I personally prefer Stockholm, admittedly I know the city better having lived there 30 years ago and having visited most recently and that will colour my perception somewhat. Although my fondest memory of Oslo over the years still is that old – watching David Moorcroft break the 5000m record at the Bislett Games in 82 English use in either city is extensive and more than competent in most cases. Last time I went to Stockholm I stayed 7 days and covered a large chunk of what I wanted to, but still could have easily extended it to 2 weeks. |

Stockholm of course! But go to Oslo first, then to Stockholm, because that is the only way you will ever feel that Stockholm is a cheap place to eat and shop. What is your preferred time period? If you like WW2, I'm told the Hjemmefront museum in Oslo is good. Older stuff, such as GNW and 30-year, we have the Army Museum and the Royal Armouries in Stockholm. |
