My wife wants to visit Ireland, mostly for the music, sometime next year – probably in June. What are the must see sites for a military history buff (no periods excluded)? Anyone from Ireland care to recommended a strategy to find good music for that matter? What is driving like in Ireland, outside of the major cities? I get the impression that, outside of Dublin, the public transit net is a bet spare and I am something of a cripple. Thanks all! |

My son and daughter rented a car and drove around. Except for some confusion on the signs, it went quite well and they had a great time stopping at local pubs for the drink and the music, which appears to be the case at most pubs. |

Athlone Castle's pretty interesting, and has the advantage of being near as dammit half-way between Dublin and Galway, which is simply too fabulous a place to miss. Mind you, if you make it July rather than June there's the Galway Festival too

The Galway festival is great – and scenery over in the West of Ireland is breathtaking. Out in the country, a lot of wee bars will have session musicians arrive in on certain nights to play – basically, you can chance upon a bar and strike it lucky. You can try link and, if you venture up to belfast, try link |

In terms of the historical stuff: kilmainham gaol (Easter Rising in 1916) Collins Barracks (National Museum) dublin gpo (Easter Rising in 1916) The Battle of the Boyne in the Boyne Valley (William and James in 1690 – i think there's been a fair bit of work done to develop the visitor centre here) Vinegar Hill in Enniscorthy (United Irishmen in 1798 and the Easter Rising in 1916) Hill of Tara (Celtic) Newgrange (Celtic) Clonmacnoise (Celtic) |
