My son and I attended a Cub Scout sleepover on the Battleship New Jersey this weekend. It was a really fascinating event! It's weird (in a good way) that as the Docent's are explaining the functions of the ship that the purpose and reason behind all of the weaponry is still a bit lost on the boys…

Cool! That sounds like an awesome sleep-over event. I know quite a few people who aren't in Cub Scouts that would have enjoyed that type of event!

Last year, we celebrated my grandfather's 90th birthday on the New Jersey (he helped build it). I was very impressed with how accommodating they were, seems like they host a wide variety of events.

@Jovian: The Ship will accommodate other groups for sleepovers, not just scouts. I think one of their requirements is that there be a certain amount of children in the group, but I'm not really sure?

@Dan: That must have been really cool for him! One of the interesting things I learned about the ship is that it is the biggest of the Iowa class BBs, because the boys from Jersey and Pennsylvania who built it right there in Camden, tacked on some extra metal here and there to make the ship 7" longer, since they wanted her to be a bit bigger than her siblings!

Always wanted to do that in my time as a scout, but never did. Now I'm waiting for my little guy to age in.

Looks like it was a great time!

I visited the NJ in 2009 and it was a very impressive sight.

Been aboard USS North Carolina a BUNCH (hey, she's only
an hour and a half away), visited USS Texas a couple
times when she was first opened, USS New Jersey in 2005
and USS Wisconsin in 2009.

Gotta figure out how to get to Mizzou and Iowa.
