Someone is using my Email contact sheet to send out Spam Email. Any ideas on how I should proceed? Thanks Friend sent me this: Hi, Your email has a spambot or something. I've received a bunch of spam from your account over the last couple days. Thought you should know so you can address it. |

Change your password for starters. |

Did that and based on what I just read I should be OK now. Fingers crossed. Too bad about 40 people in my book got junk from me. |

Same thing happened to me I caught it right away and changed my password, no more problems. |

Make sure to clean your PC too, e.g. of all the spambots, adware, and virus stuff. Avast is free, and supposedly pretty decent. I also use Spybot. I delete cookies regularly, and run Spybot at least twice a week, or anytime my PC seems to bog down a bit – that really helps considerably. If you use Microsoft, make sure to check their site for updates to your operating system as well, which may provide some protection too. |

Well, first you should send everyone in your address book an email letting them know you know about the problem, so you don't get forty people letting you know about it. Then send another email telling them you've changed your password, and that you hope this will fix it, and to let you know if it doesn't. Then send them all another email apologizing for the problem, and promising to be more careful in the future. Then run anti-viral software. It's possible the bad guy got your email password through malware, or that you got some malware through the compromised email. You'll probably find you need to update your antiviral software. In so doing you'll probably learn some new things about viruses, which will deepen your convictions on running anti-viral software regularly. Be sure and share these lessons with everyone in your address book. At least, this appears to be the developing tradition on how to handle this problem. Andrew |

Run Av software, as others have said already. Do a full scan for this. No touching the computer while this is going on. Next, get a spyware detector/cleaner program. I've used malwarebytes with very good results. malwarebytes.org Get the free version and do a full scan with that as well. John |

combatpainter Thanks so much for your recent multiple offers. Although I think I'll pass on your "Looks like real ROLEX", Canadian Prescription drugs at bargain prices, herbal additives that will enlarge parts of my body, and Cash from Nigerian Oil Ministers offers, generous and tempting that they were especially at those prices, I will accept your offer of 100 custom painted 28mm figures at no charge just for spreading the word about your business to my friends. You are far too generous in supplying the lead as well as the painting service, but who am I to argue with an offer like that! Oh, and by the way, I didn't break the chain in the email string and sent your note to Pray For Whirled Peas to 100 people within 10 minutes and am awaiting the good fortune that it should bring me later today. Thanks again, JJ P.S. I didn't send this.
