I find it amusing how jarring hearing a familiar word used can sound jarring if not used "correctly". grin

I am also aware that "usage" is also used in this context.

Try to keep this civil, OK?
Try and keep this civil, OK?
Do both mean the same, or are there subtle differences?

Nope! Both used over here, I've no idea if it's a regional style or just personal preference.

So, does that mean it is OK to write 'woulda' or 'try and' on TMP? Can I claim this forum as being informal and argue that 'eye dialect' is allowed? It is, afterall, in the dictionary. :)

Fixen to…..

That would be 'Fixin' to' Kyote, leastwise while I was in Oklahoma. Of course, they might'n have been pullin' the wool over a carpetbag'n Yankee's eyes. Not that any self respectin' Sooner'd touch a sheep, you understand.

When I went to the school to explain to my son's teacher that he would only be enrolled for the first week because we were moving, but he insisted on starting school anyway, she just looked at me with her hed cocked to the side while I was speaking and then said 'You're not from around here, are ya?'.
