I went into Borders on my break to buy an Elmore Leonard. I found the one I wanted.

Then, I decided to browse, and barely escaped with my wallet intact.

First, I found an Osprey on the P-36 Hawk. Anyone who reads my stuff knows that I am a sucker for the Finnish Air Force, and the use of captured aircraft. The price tag was $22, so I put it down. I can get it cheaper at a con. I never even knew that there WAS an Osprey on the P-36.

Did I learn my lesson? I then saw Craig Ferguson's autobiography. I read the first chapter on the White house Correspiondent's Dinner, and it was great. The first words of the second chapter "It all started when the Germans tried to kill my parents" mearly snared me, but again the price was $22, so I passed. I can get it for $5 USD when it's remaindered…

I went to the rest room, and prepared to leave. Alas, I walked by a display table with "An Army at Dawn" in paperback on the table.

Sigh. I am "doing" a Yank Armored company for FoW with Lees, so I had no real choice, did I?
I also know next to nothing about TORCH and Kasserine, so I was doomed.
One thing I know, is that this will force me to do Vichy French, so I can whup their asses in FoW.

I was in Barnes & Nobles today sipping a green tea latte (killing time while my wife was shopping) & saw this link "The War That Killed Achilles: The True Story of Homer's Iliad and the Trojan War". I flipped through it and may read it once it's in the libraries or Half Price Books. Until then, I have Plutarch's Lives from the local library to keep me busy.

Darn you, Dean! Now you are sending me to B&N tomorrow! grin

DeanMoto20 Nov 2009 9:05 p.m. PST

Don't forget to go venti – it only costs a little more than grande grin Happy hunting, Dean

P.S. I just looked up The War That Killed Achilles in the public library online catalog & there are 5 copies of that book – all checked out, but my request is in.

"An Army at Dawn" is quite good. And as you know, I am a Leonard fan. I'm not sure I liked "Up in Honey's Room" as much as "The Hot Kid", but I enjoyed it.

John, it's simple. Do my trick and go into record shops or book stores with NO CASH! Works a treat every time for me. I always find oodles of stuff I'd love to pick up. When I'm flushed with spare coin I can't find a darned thing to spend it on.

Does the Craig Ferguson autobiography go into Bing Hitler and where you can get a copy of the Sheep Song?

Borders' Rewards card is excellent ..every so often I get a "40% off anything" coupon. Even more frequently a 30% off one .. doesn't cost a thing but the 2 minutes it takes to leave your particulars.

I love waiting in line and hearing the Rewards pitch and the customer get all huffy like its this terrible burden …

Hah!

You think -you- got issues?
I came across an Estate Sale
for a complete Library;
5, ooo volumes of primary source Middle Eastern studies-

…I've got 30 days to come up with
Five Grand or I lose my Earnest Money…

Expect to see some stuff
on MarketPlace in near future…

…And all I was looking for
was one volume of Ed Burroughs
'John Carter' series to complete
my collection!!!

Here's my latest book-buying experience. Tuesday I am just north of LAX, killing time before my flight out; my wife is with me and it is SHE who's looking for a good bookstore, so that I won't be bored waiting and flying in the dark. (We were at my Dad-in-law's Bday the day before, and the little woman was visiting Friday through Wednesday; so she wasn't flying home with me: I flew down Monday, attended the Bday event, and flew back the next day: that's how to do trips when you don't want to be away from home in the first place.) She found a bookstore, a USED/discounted books bookstore! I had just over half an hour to kill. I came out with "Armagedon the Battle for Germany" link ; and "Baudolino" link for a total cost of less than $9. USD The Eco novel was one buck! I have found his novels readable if not always all that entertaining: and naturally it was Eco that I read on the trip home, getting through over fifty pages with interruptions. It sure made the flight fly by faster!…

If you're ever in Portland, Oregon, check out Powell's Books, on, er, Powell Blvd. It's huge. Tons of used books.
They may even be on-line by now; although, when I lived around that area, they didn't even have an in-store catalogue.

Unfortunately, Borders UK is now deceased, most stores having closed on Dec.23rd. From rumour there was little left by then, with last minute clear-outs at VERY low prices (1p each, or such, with buyers of some fittings even stripping the shops while they were trading. A very difficult time for the staff.
