I've been hooked by this massive RPG since its recent release. Bioware has incorporated the best features of games like Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic, both of which I also enjoyed. The party selection and combat systems would be very familiar to KotOR players. I'm about 30 hours into the game so far, which I've read can take 70-80 hours to complete. If you enjoy big RPGs, I'd recommend it, but be prepared for a heavy time investment.

I can take small bites of games usually and complete them over time. How easy is this one to walk away from when it is time for bed? grin

Well, I finally tore myself away from it at 2:30 am. Fortunately I didn't have to work today!

Saw the trailer: awesome! Need to get a far better PC if I am to play it though :(

@svsavory: what configuration do you use? RAM, graphics card etc.?

I'm playing the Xbox 360 version, and it doesn't look as nice as the trailer. It still looks good, though.

Can you describe the combat system? I detest turn based combat like you find in Lost Odyssey and prefer the sort of FPS type combat system one finds in Oblivion. In other words, I want to be able, if my character is sneaky enough, to be able to spot potential enemies a long distance off, sneak up and start peppering them with arrows before they can react and run towards me or fire back.

My wife and I are big Oblivion fans and were hoping Dragon Age: Origins might be a similar sort of RPG type game. We also use XBox 360.

Thanks in advance,

Gamespot video review of the game. It should answer your questions…

It's not FPS; game play is entirely in 3rd person view. The scope of the game, broad story and cut-scenes remind me of Oblivion. Graphics are good, but not as nice as Oblivion on the 360, IMO. It's not an open world like Oblivion; it's more like Fable II with areas that you travel between.

You start as one of three races, (human, elf or dwarf), and one of three classes (warrior, mage, rogue). The race/class combination you select at the start of the game will determine which of six unique opening story lines you will play. In addition to your own character, you can recruit additional party members; you typically control a party of four at any given time.

During fights, you can switch between characters at will, to cast spells with your mage for example, then switch to your warrior to bash skulls. Party members not under your direct control at any given moment are AI, but you can assign each party member a series of standing conditional orders, such as having your mage heal any party member whose health drops below a specified level.

Battles can get frantic, but bringing up the radial skills/talents/spells menu freezes the action, allowing you time to ponder what to do. Battles can sometimes get large, with a dozen or more participants per side.

The story is very epic, and I've enjoyed watching how my in-game decision are affecting the way things are playing out.

Voice acting is generally very good. Credits feature Claudia Black as Morrigan, a mage who joins your group early in the game. Kate Mulgrew, Tim Curry and Tim Russ also contributed voices.

I'm looking forward to seeing the game's finale, and I'll probably want to give it at least one more play through.
