How does that explain the inhibition grapefruits have on CYP3A4?
Most drugs have to be "activated" first in the body by an Iso-enzyme for the drug to have the required effect. CYP3A4 is one of those enzymes, in fact the one that handles the most drugs. Grapefruits inactivate this iso-enzyme so well that they have been called the "Suicide Inhibitors". So if you are trying to off yourself with Phenobarbs and drink them with grapefruit juice, guess what? You'll be still alive in the morning.
That's good right? Well no.
If you have a drug that keeps you alive, heart pills, high blood pressure medications, HIV protease inhibitors, cholesterol meds, etc., then they will become inactivated too. For many, grapefruits are out. The juice too.
Sadly, I'm on two blood pressure pills and have to stay away from grapefruits, which I love. I love the picture Jana linked to, I can almost taste them. Check with your MD's before you buy those Rio Stars.
