Do they still exist? It seems First Person Shooter has killed them all. |

If genre doesn't matter, 4Xs are still being made, but I recommend getting several to find one you like. |

Massive AssaultNetwork 1&2 are turned based sci-fi combat, but look like an RTS with animations etc. Not played it, but just seen it asa download on steam – £19.99 GBP for the 2nd one, £34.99 GBP for 2nd, plus original and it's expansions. |

"4Xs" Name for type of games where you control an empire and explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. |

Hm. Haven't really been paying attention to new games for a while, but I've long felt that turn-based strategy was a great genre that should be revived. |

Does anyone know of present day equivalents of (ol' Talonsoft, now Matrix) 'West Front', 'East Front' or 'Rising Sun'? |

If you can find it Masters of Orion 2. 3 seems more/overly complicated, very good 4x game. |

I'll have to second that. The tech-curve also suffered from too much realism for a fun game. For instance, turn one I decide to build a scout ship to see what was around my starting system. I go to all the places that are close and then send it along a long route. Meanwhile, I develop tech level 2 engines. Then I build a new scout with those. I send it down the same path and a few turns later, it arrives. 169 turns later, my first scout arrives. |

Just play on a FPS server with a lot of lag. Turns the game into a turnbased strategy game. |

If you can find it Masters of Orion 2. 3 seems more/overly complicated, very good 4x game. Agreed. Moo 2 is still the definitive space conquest game. Moo 3 was horrible. I wasted $20 USD on that stinker! |

the old Battleground series from Talonsoft, also Operation Art of War 1 and 2 – 20th Cent versions. Basically Board games with lots of steps on the counters, plus a isometric view option. Not strictly turn based but If you can get it 'Combat Mission' series was good. You plan 60secs of movement, the computer plays it through with you viewing (no control on play back), then you get to plan the next 60 seconds. Total War series- more like real ancients/medieval than RTS like Age of Kings/Cossacks etc |

Steel Panthers is pretty good, and free, as well. But that one's a few years old. |

If you can get it 'Combat Mission' series was good 1, 2 and 3. Nice 'fog of war' elements to it too, and it plays well by email. |

Speaking of oldies, Emperor of the Fading Suns was pretty dang cool, but it's too detailed for its own good. WAAAAY too much management required, IMO. MOO 2 has got to be one of my faavorites from back then. |
