I saw the game just came out recently and I was tempted to buy the download version last night. Before i do, has anyone played it? I always thought FoG was too fiddly but as a computer game where everything is handled in the background, maybe not. Thoughts? John |

I assume this isn't the Microprose Napoleonic wargame of that name? |

OK, well they just released it so I will give my thoughts quickly. Its not really like playing Field of Glory. They use the unit names and the attack factors from the game, but it played using hexes so there's no typical line of battle. It is turn based, it combines a lot of things that are seperate in FOG into a few phases. The computer plays fairly well, although it tends to pile in units from behind, and then when one in the front breaks it cuases chaoes behind (unless they changed this in the release version) If you like playing board games on the PC typical to their other games you may like it. If you're more into real time simulation or more highly produced games you may not. I'm not planning on buying it – its just not my thing. Steve |

Well something is out there officially, I just got the following email from Slitherine: "Field of Glory Digital Patched to 1.01 and Released!" Slitherine is proud to announce the online release of Field of Glory Digital. The PC turn-based strategy game is the official digital product of award winning tabletop gaming system. To date sales have exceeded 200,000 copies and FOG releases comprise 9 additional Companion Books, with 4 more in production to complete this popular series, published by Osprey. The digital version, developed by HexWar, lets fans play single player battles against the AI or multiplayer battles across the internet. The innovative multiplayer system created specifically for this product has been designed to be an evolution of old play by e-mail (PBEM) systems. Player will find there is no need to download files or any other fiddly system to play opponent's turns. The game is able to handle multiple matches in real time without any interaction from the player. No more searching through lobbies for an opponent - your challenge can be issued and then accepted when you are offline, and your opponent can play his turn while you sleep and it's there ready for you in the morning. Jointly developed with UK specialist Hexwar, the games is set during the Rise of Rome, from Zama in North Africa to the battles of Boudicca's revolt in Britain. Etc, etc
it goes on for quite a bit. |

You need only go to their website to see the "buy download" button. I never actually saw a release statement though. Apparently it has been out since Nov14. @Geoff: I got the same message. It is an advert plus an announcement that they've fixed a couple of bugs. @Steve: Thanks for the info. I might get it. I don't often get to game so any computer opponent is better than no opponent at all! |
