WOW! What a game yesterday, the rivalry lives up to the hype. But what an arrogant and stupid call from Belichick to go on 4th and 2. Got what he deserved for that. Still undefeated! Go Colts! |

But what an arrogant and stupid call from Belichick to go on 4th and 2. Got what he deserved for that. Belicheat definitely deserved that. |

That was an exciting game, for sure, and the end of it was incredible. |
Doctor X | 16 Nov 2009 8:39 a.m. PST |
If I was commisioner I would start an immediate investigation into his finances. There is no other rational reason for such a call. That was an intent to throw the game. Is he really that much of an arrogant to think he could get that first down? It did win me $50 USD though so I'm happy with it. |
John the OFM | 16 Nov 2009 8:59 a.m. PST |
Relying on Tom Brady to convert a 4th and 2 is not all that dumb. Combine that with not being able to challenge the spot because you used up your timeouts, though
I think that it was a rational decision, seeing that his DEFENSE had blown a 31-14 lead in the 4th quarter. I would rather rely on Brady too. However, *I* am not a registered Football Genius™, paid $5 USD million a year, and am allowed to make stupid decisions. |

Local sports radio today, one of guys admitted that if they made the play, we'd all be talking about what a freaking genius he was. After seeing what Manning did to the Phins a couple weeks ago under similar circumstances, it was alomst inevitable, anyway

Maurice Jones-Drew took a knee on the one. That was a slap in the face of HIS defense, too. However, that one worked. |
| ArchiducCharles | 16 Nov 2009 9:32 a.m. PST |
Dunno, If he couldn't get the previous 3rd and 2, then what makes you think you'll get it on 4th and 2? Plus, the Pats D played a good game in general, and the young Colts receiver made quite a few mistakes, being Belichik I would've prefered my chances on Manning driving 70+ yards for the TD. But hey, as a Colts fan I loved that call! |
| Who asked this joker | 16 Nov 2009 9:51 a.m. PST |
I'm with you Charles. Get Manning as far from the goal line as you can. |
John the OFM | 16 Nov 2009 9:54 a.m. PST |
Had he punted, and Manning driven the 70+ yards, Belichik would have been dumb for relying on his defense that fell apart in the 4th quarter. But hey, I am still bummed about the Steelers. |
| pphalen | 16 Nov 2009 10:08 a.m. PST |
I loved the press conference where Jones-Drew apologized to the Fantasy Owners who played him that week! |

Relying on Tom Brady to convert a 4th and 2 is not all that dumb.</q.You are right. It's not dumb. It's idiotic. You logic suggests its harder to score from 30 yards out than 70 yards out after the punt. |
| Ed Mohrmann | 16 Nov 2009 11:29 a.m. PST |
Belicheck had no good options. If he punts, he gives Manning the ball, with maybe a 70 or 75 yard drive to make, and with probably 2:05 or so on the clock, two team times-out AND the two-minute warning time-out. Manning had put together an 80-yard drive earlier in the game. He has put together several 90 + drives over the past two seasons. While more difficult than the 28-yard drive, still not a really good choice. Better, perhaps, but not *good*, given a tiring defense and Manning/Offensive co-ordintor's increased (thru play) knowledge of the defense's gameplan. If, as happened, he misses on the 4th and 2, he gives Manning the ball with < 30 yards to go. No good options, I believe, although I also (like the OFM) am not paid mega-bucks as an analyst. The key mistake, in my very humble opinion, was calling that second-down time-out in the third quarter. An old and wise coach knows that those (times-out) are valuable and I don't know why BB forgot that. |
| Ed Mohrmann | 16 Nov 2009 11:33 a.m. PST |
Doc X, the Patriots have > 75% success rate on 4th down tries. It's even better on 4th and short (< 3) BB is a lot of things, some of them not really admirable, but I don't think he's in anyone's pay, other than the Pat's owner. |
| Who asked this joker | 16 Nov 2009 11:43 a.m. PST |
If you have no good options, you take conventional wisdom and PUNT THE BALL!!!!! I don't think Belicheat would have been demonized for punting. Folks would be standing around saying, "Dang, what are the Patriots going to do now with no defense?" |
| ArchiducCharles | 16 Nov 2009 12:05 p.m. PST |
Well, from Tony Dungy (you play the percentage) to Rodney Harrison (worst coaching decision of Belichik career) to Tedy Bruschi (Belichik disrespected his defense), I would say the "experts", including old Patriots, mostly thought it was an awful call. |
| quidveritas | 16 Nov 2009 12:06 p.m. PST |
How about a bone head Belichek? Gave them the game. mjc |
Doctor X | 16 Nov 2009 12:49 p.m. PST |
Ed – I think that call was too important with those odds. Even with a 75% chance they still fail 1 in 4 times. Play the odds. What are the odds of Manning scoring from 70 yards away in 2 minutes? What are the odds of him scoring from 30 yards out in that same time? Someone do the math and get back to us with that
BTW my comment on Belicheck being paid was just a poke. I'm sure he would never do anything dishonest. I have no dog in this fight and like I said, his brilliant call won me $50 USD so I'm not trying to troll. I just think it what a really bad call and very hard for anyone to rationally defend that decision. That's the challenge of being a hardcore fan. All rationale goes out the window as the fan tries to somehow justify the call to help cope with the result. Pats have the J-E-T-S next week and will be able to take out their frustrations on them. |
| Ed Mohrmann | 16 Nov 2009 1:52 p.m. PST |
Well, I'm happy the Colts won. I have no particular team alliance/favorite, I enjoy good play. Manning is, if not the best there is playing today at that position, among the top three. Similarly, BB is among the top 5 in coaches (active and recently retired), and Brady an elite QB, so for a fan of the game, and not a particular team, it was great to see. However, I'd have punted, too, were it my decision. Least-worst option. |

Great game except for the coaching blunder. Lucky I didn't turn it off. |
combatpainter | 16 Nov 2009 5:02 p.m. PST |
You punt in that situation. End of story. It is about playing the percentages and having confidence in your defence. |
Extra Crispy | 16 Nov 2009 6:00 p.m. PST |
Now somewhere I read an article by a statistician. His conclusion was that on 4th down, between the twenties, you are much better off going for it on 4th down. Wish I could find the link

You punt and play the percentages! I would like to know the number of times the Colts have driven for touchdowns this season when getting the ball inside their 30. What would it be? About 30%? That is all you need to know! All the rest is just talking sports, second guessing, and BS! |
