and 2 out of 3 moviegoers, aged 14, who saw it in Franklin, TN and rode to and from the theatre in my car said, "It was good, but it made no sense." The other (my son) said he had no problems understanding it, but he thought certain characters were "going to die sooner." So there you go. (For what it's worth, none of them were letting loose with "That movie was totally awesome!" which I heard after Transformers 2. You know, if you spend the whole movie destroying the bulk of the planet, and a 14 year old doesn't come out of the movie saying, "that was cool," you've obviously screwed up somewhere.) From the three boys' reactions, I'd put it at out of 5. Fortunately, I avoided the film myself, and got some Krylon and epoxy at Wal-mart, and used the free time to prime my 10mm Copplestone Horse Tribe minis. |

John Cusack as an action movie hero? Does not compute. |
| nazrat | 14 Nov 2009 6:16 p.m. PST |
Every review I have read basically said that after three hours and six minutes of CGI dreck and improbable/impossible physics defying crap happening the audience was basically begging for the end of the world

Shagnasty | 14 Nov 2009 7:21 p.m. PST |
Yep. That was my feeling after seeing the trailer. Non-starter although I'm a big Apocalypse movie fan. |
| Cincinnatus | 14 Nov 2009 8:28 p.m. PST |
I'm with you Shagnasty. I wanted to like the film when I first heard about it but it seems like it's all about how cool the effects will be when the world ends. Is there a story buried in there somewhere? |
| Top Gun Ace | 14 Nov 2009 9:08 p.m. PST |
I had the same thought, after seeing the trailer. Good to help keep the CGI people employed though, no doubt. Did Al Gore play a cameo role? That would seem like a natural casting decision. |
| mweaver | 14 Nov 2009 9:18 p.m. PST |
I generally like John Cusack, but this film looked terrible from the first teaser trailers on. |
| Steve Hazuka | 14 Nov 2009 10:07 p.m. PST |
What NO ZOMBIES! It can't be any good. |
| Rattlehead | 14 Nov 2009 11:21 p.m. PST |
I've only seen one trailer for it and it looked neat in a brain candy sort of way. Besides, I like John Cusack. BUT, every time I think of the trailer, I see the world apparently collapsing in on itself and I think, "How the heck can this end in any other way than everyone on the planet dying?" If the planet is actually falling apart, life would become unsustainable pretty quickly, right? |
| bandit86 | 15 Nov 2009 12:10 a.m. PST |
The Movie was good but very stereotypical with lots of Plot holes. Cusack was good (Not much of a stretch) Cewitle Ejodofor (sp) was really good I like him he is a good actor. The action scenes very cool if not disturbing. Stay tuned for 2013
WWIII. |

link says it all, thanks Cracked. com and bandit – no shame on you. I challenge his best friends to spell Chiwetel Ejiofor correctly without checking. Pat

I think that I shall rewatch "Earthquake" instead

| Space Monkey | 15 Nov 2009 12:59 p.m. PST |
I like the old disaster movies like Earthquake and The Towering Inferno
but the previews for this 2012 thing make it look like long sequences of CGI destruction with cutaways to 'live' actors mugging quips and reaction shots
then back to the CGI. I'm also a fan of John Cusack (and his sister Joan) but this isn't the sort of movie I'd expect him to shine in
so he's not much of a draw for it either. Unless my dad gets a hair to drag me to see this thing at a matinee I expect I'll happily stay clear of it. |
| jdpintex | 15 Nov 2009 2:09 p.m. PST |
Just saw it. Not all that bad. CGI was great! Yellowstone going up was awesome and probably the only thing they got technically right. I like Cusak and he did a fine job for a special effects movie. Not something that will be up for any Oscars, but a good matinee flick. |

Rottentomatoes gives it 39% and "Consensus: Roland Emmerich's 2012 provides plenty of visual thrills, but lacks a strong enough script to support its massive scope and inflated length." -- Tim |

I wonder if the same fellow who takes offense at my quoting Rotten tomatoes will attack me again for this? -- Tim |

Why didn't they release this in 2012? |
| 15mm and 28mm Fanatik | 17 Nov 2009 10:11 p.m. PST |
Like Transformers and G.I. Joe, any semblance of a 'plot' is secondary to the CGI eye-candy. Roland Emmerich's movies, like Michael Bay's, are nothing more than a lame excuse to showcase fx at the expense of storytelling. |
| bandit86 | 18 Nov 2009 5:15 a.m. PST |
Duh Gray Ghost in 2012 we are all going to be dead. They released it now so they can make some money and party till 2012 :) |
| stenicplus | 18 Nov 2009 8:12 a.m. PST |
Like Transformers and G.I. Joe, any semblance of a 'plot' is secondary to the CGI eye-candy. I think you'll find that in Transformers CGI is not the eye-candy. Steve P |
Der Alte Fritz | 22 Nov 2009 3:55 p.m. PST |
How does it end? From the trailer viewing, if the tidal waves even swamp Mt Everest, then presumably everyone dies unless they are in a space ship, but then they have to land at some point. |
ScottWashburn | 30 Nov 2009 12:08 p.m. PST |
The sad part of 2012 is that it COULD have been a good movie. There were parts of it that envoked the classic George Pal movie, "When Worlds Collide". The questions: "What do you do in the face of such a colossal disaster? How do you decide what and who to save?" are fascinating ones. If they had just latched onto that instead of following one group of people through an absurd series of narrow escapes they might have come up with a real winner. |

I thought that an odd choice of location to find land, Drakensberg, which in Zulu means "barrier of spears". So, 2013 is When the Lions Feed? |

I should also add that I was much relieved to see a disaster movie where the "high-ranking-government-official" actually listened to the scientist predicting disaster and acted on the information. Quite refreshing :) They tried to make him look like a twit later on, be even then he made the right decision. |

I was planning on seeing it with my good friend but he passed away earlier in the week,so i decided not to go. Overall i did'nt really want to see another Disaster film and it being one done by Roland Emmerich i'll pass since he did a little film in 1998 about a lizard attacking New York, which i REALLY did'nt care for in the least. "Why didn't they release this in 2012?" You obviously aren't paying any attention. There won't be anybody left to see it. The world is going to be completely destroyed. JW |
