What are the best Batman stories? I prefer the dark brooding angsty ones and enjoyed The Dark Knight Returns. I'm looking to get my hands on Killing Joke, Death in the Family and Hush. Any recommendations? |

Killing Joke and Gotham by Gaslight were two of my favorites. |

The Killing Joke is excellent; quite a twist on the Joker's origins. Death in the Family was mediocre— really just a gimmick. Look for a reprint of "The Joker Fish" series from the comics, by Dennis O'Neill. One of the best Joker story arcs ever. Classic Joker— illogically logical plot, deranged, unpredictable behavior, death served with twisted puns
great stuff. Also look for Mad Love, based on the animated Batman Adventures, featuring Harley Quinn, the Joker's girlfriend from the show. Excellent graphic novel. Not as dark as others, but the writers for both the show and the comics spawned from it could pull off sympathetic villains and multi-sided stories better than anything I ever saw in the "regular" Batman mags. And do watch the series, as well as the full-length film "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm." Mark Hamill's Joker (voice) is straight out of Dennis O'Neill's work, and remains the best portrayal of the character I've seen. Yes, even against Jack and Heath. |

The Long Halloween is also very good. If you are interested in reading something with the rest of the DC heroes, Identity Crisis is excellent. |

I vote for Dark Knight Returns and Year One. The Killing Joke was very good as well. |

The "Joker Fish" story was by Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers, not Dennis O'Neil. The collected edition is called Strange Apparitions. You could also try Batman Chronicles Vol 1, which has the very early pre-Robin stories. The art is quite primitive, but there's a real pulp quality to the stories. |

The one where the origins of most of the main characters were shown, and Robin helping Batman snap out of some issues he was going through by diguising himself in his dad's(Dr. Wayne, that is) old bat costume. |

I prefer the Batman the Animated Series character. For the simple reason that there's not so much continuity baggage for the character. The full continuity is Animated series -> Justice League -> Batman Beyond. |
