A friend of mine wants to create a comic strip, and wants to know what software would be useful. Can anyone recommend (a) a basic drawing program that would be up to the task, or (b) a dedicated comic creation software package? |

I use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I tried Comic Life, but I find more freedom working from scratch. |

I had fun playing with the free version of "Comic Life". |

How bad are the prices? Student discount, Creative Suite 2 (bundle, basically), can't remember price. |

If you've got someone in college, the entire Adobe Creative Suite 4 (the current version) is $400 USD or so through Studica.com However, Illustrator and Photoshop have a pretty steep learning curve. Photoshop Elements is cheaper and has everything he'd need. Likewise for GIMP – but it's free. If its a web comic, then basic tools (artboard and a scanner) are sufficient, but if he plans on printing, then proper software is a must. Blambot sells comic-style fonts, and I think you can download free thought and speach bubbles. Personally, I'd e-mail Howard Tayler (Schlockmercenary), Brad Guigar (Evil, Inc) Aaron Williams (Nodwick) or the like to ask how they do it. Tayler and Guigar put out a "how to make web comics" series not too long ago. I'd avoid Phil Foglio or Scott Kurtz as, while they do great art and writing, they are both too full of themselves and are complete putzes. Wyatt |
