"Any other owner who wants to can spend as much." At a 1/5 of a billion dollars per year, an owner needs a market that can generate enough revenue to cover the majority or go bankrupt themselves. Hicks tried to do that with the Rangers and look at him now. MLB protects the Yankees and Mets monopoly on the largest market; both teams combine for 335 million dollars in 2009 and were the top two spenders in the league. That's more than the 6 smallest market teams. The Yankees spend almost twice as much per player as the smallest 22 teams. The best players entering free agency go to the Yankees. The Yankees are therfore staffed with the best guys with 6 or more years of experience. Can you beat the Yankees? Sure. You only need an entire team of youngsters that have grown up through your farm system, or you traded for with kids that have grown up through your farm system, that can out produce the old geezers that were cherry picked from the entire league. It's a wonder why any Yankee fan gets excited to see them win. It's like, "Wow, the Bellagio just won another hand of Blackjack." Big woop. |

Just like the house winning in Vegas, the Yankees winning the world series is EXPECTED. Besides, everyone needs someone to hate in sports – the Yanks fill this role admirably – and without teams like NY, the stories of teams like Tampa Bay would be that less compelling. JJ |
