So the wife and I were walking down the beach and she found a small crab shell top.

Kind of like this but about the size of quarter.

My wife wants to make it into a ring but the shell is so fragile that it will never survive it.

I was thinking of perhaps adding clear resin around it to make it stronger, but is there anything else that would be good for this project?

Is it just the top side or is it hollow in the middle with empty leg holes?
If it's just the top I can't see much to do but resin coat it.
This stuff is pretty easy to use for jewelry purposes:

it is just the top half.

if its small enough, cast it into a block of resin.

Or take it to a taxidermist that does fish. He can reproduce it in a material that will last a very long time. Probably better than anything you can do -- if it's going to be special, might be worth spending a couple bucks on it.
