link Interesting story. I remember thinking the idea looked feasible when the movie came out. Now someone's done it. They probably do need to get the weight down for both safety and flexibility of use (particularly in search and rescue operations in unstable/collapsed buildings). But quite a technological achievement. |

I remember seeing such prototype exoskeletons in popular science mags in the 70's. Unfortunately their feedback was so bad the hydraulics that helped you lift heavy loads could tear you apart if you weren't careful. link |

Well, they haven't actually built it yet, note the tethers in the second photo. This won't be real until it's a fully self-contained unit. It won't be useful before it can lift in the 1000 pound range, either. -Kle. |

They are not the only ones working on this
I believe i've seen at least a few different versions of this technology, one of them was a U.S. company working on military applications. I have no doubt a basic exo suit will become viable sooner than later

Bah. The Japanese are also working frantically to create convincingly realistic interactive female robots. They claim they're to make receptionists and tour guides but, despite my best efforts, I know too much about anime trends and common themes to believe that for a moment. Power armor, however, is pure awesome! |
