Ok were these people living on another planet? Have they no contact with current events (current as in the last 10 years or so) Why in HELL would anyone cruse into or even near Somali waters?

I hope it turns out well for them but don't have a lot of sympathy its like putting your hand in a tigers cage sure you can do it and you MIGHT not pull back a bloody stump but do you want to take the chance?

I don't know if people who willfully (or by negligence) put themselves in harm's way should be given the same attention as those who aren't.

It would not be fair to endanger rescuers that way.

But that's just me.

Still, this thread is an excellent travel advisory for those who are not up to speed on dangers in that part of the world.

To be fair, according to the map in that article, they were captured 800 miles offshore – I wouldn't have considered that "Somali waters", and I don't recall any of the news about the piracy in the region ever stating how far offshore they range.

Are any companies out there including a pirate clause in their boat insurance policies?

Andrew Paul,

For quite a while now, warnings have been issued against all private boat travel (by westeners) cruising the Indian Ocean and the waters surrounding the Philipines.

The warning includes a much wider area than where the actual attacks have taken place so far.

Map of actual attacks:

Map of warning areas in the late 90s (the more recent ones are much larger than that – I'll try to dig them up later):

Yep. I see a game coming out of that kind of stuff.

So who's going to develop the rules for attacks by small boats and other craft?

Is there anything useful for that already, or will some daring wargame guru from our peers take up the challenge?
