Nicknames or real names: And no, the modern pop media "Ocho Cinco" marketing tags don't count. (do any compete with colleg basketball's "Baskerville Holmes"?)
Otis Sistrunk
Lester the Molester Hayes Devon Hurricane Hester (my favorite) Dick Butkus Icky Woods Booger MacPhearson Slowhand Marley (Bob's more violent son, another Smokey personal pick)) Gluehands Johnson Hollywood Henderson (his coke problems fit his nickname perfectly) |

There's a linebacker with a last name of Anger playing for some college this year. |

LOL! Iron Head Heyward ran for 344 yards against UM one year we won the NC! :) |

Bryan Anger plays for Cal. Too bad he's the punter, otherwise, it would be an awesome name. With a name like Anger, he should be a defensive standout, not a punter. |

What about the real "Smokey Roan"? |

Not sure the first name but there is a linebacker that plays for Iowa with the last name Angerer. Will probably see him playing on Sundays in the near future. Harry Colon used to be a defensive back for the Lions! Who names their kid Harold when your last name is colon? |

Hacksaw? Are you talking about Hacksaw Jim Duggan the wrestler? |
| quidveritas | 28 Oct 2009 2:27 p.m. PST |
He's talking about 'Hacksaw' Reynolds. Almost everyone on every team has a nick name -- the public just doesn't hear about them. Where they come from I'll never know: Dan Rambo = 'Howie' Malek = 'Five Ohh' (a Center – love to know where that came from) Silva = 'Little Willie' (this guy played weak side linebacker) Van Doern = 'Vons' or 'Fonzie' McAnything = 'Mac' Ukrainian names with no vowels = 'alphabet' could go on all day. mjc |

Cleveland once had a receiver named Fair Hooker link |
| carne68 | 28 Oct 2009 9:10 p.m. PST |
I was referring to Reynolds but the wrestler also played ball. "Upon graduating high school, he was recruited by Ohio State University, but would instead choose to play football at Southern Methodist University, where he was eventually voted team captain. Duggan earned his bachelors degree in applied plant biology. After college, Duggan was signed by the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League, but was released after being plagued by knee injuries." There was also 'Neon' Deion Sanders 'Cadillac' Williams Mark Schlereth aka 'Stink' 'The Blond Bomber' Terry Bradshaw 'Broadway Joe' Joe Namath |

Charlie 'Choo-Choo' Justice, RB University of NC, late 1940's. Bill Barnes, FB/LB Wake Forest University, mid-50's, called 'Watchout' by his teammates, since you had to 'watch out' for Bill. He'd absolutely run over you in trying to get a ballcarrier or extra yardage. I actually saw him run over (and injure !) two officials on different plays on a rainy day in 1957
The Chicago Bears had a DE with the nick 'Growler,' from his habit of growling fiercely at OT's to try and intimidate them. This was about 20-25 years ago and I cannot recall his RN. And who can forget the wideout, Golden Richards ! |

The Saints had a punter or kicker in the mid-70s named Happy Feller. Don't forget Joe Don Looney of Detroit (and others). Fred "The Hammer" Williamson of the Chiefs. "Too Mean" Harvey Martin (other side of Ed "Too Tall" Jones mentioned above. Lou "The Toe" Groza |

Just remembered, Lance Rentzel was called "Super Baby" for a brief period, after his Mom exclaimed "That's my baby, isn't he super?" after he scored a touchdown in college. |
