The new Google Earth: my daughter is using it right now on the "spiffy" 'puter, and holy cow! have they got detail or what? I am probably the last TMPer to know this, but it kinda annoys me too: if you click your city and little camera icons show up, that means that they've taken 360 degree photos of your city, and probably your street (it appears that these were shot c. three years ago). She clicked our address and on a little street with eight (count 'em eight) houses on it, less than a hundred yards long, "they" took FOUR perspective shots. The weird thing is, yours truly is featured, in my black long-sleeved T-shirt, out front, weeding the parking strip. It makes me feel very strange. How did "they" do this photography so that you can get a full 360 degree view from that camera point; with me not twenty feet away, on a street that has zero traffic at any given time, and I didn't even see what "they" were doing?

Anyway, you can see places like my hometown like never before: just type in the city name, and go….

Didn't anyone tell you those black helicopters were also silent?

The Streetview camera threw a wobbly near me:

Go a couple of yards west, and all is fine. But for some reason, this stretch of the road has no images.

It could be the residents of that bit asked for the images to be removed.

The 360 camera rig sits on top of a normal sedan and works fine at speed.

So it would look like a funky "cop" light or something? That would be a boring job, wouldn't it? Drive around town, up or down every street: move on to the next town. Day after day, month after month, year after year. Then repeat all over again.

I wanted to see Battle, East Sussex. Poop, no 360 degree rigs have visited there, yet….

Anybody check out Scunthorpe yet?

It actually sits higher above the car on a four-legged rig. While it is tall (6-7' total), the rig is light enough that you would likely miss it if you weren't looking at the car as it drove by. I've seen one driving around, and seen shadows of the car and rig in some of their pictures.

Of course, if you are looking at the car, then you can be certain that your face will be registered and will be googleable forever.

Could be, although I'm not sure they have that option. In any case, there are images linked to that location, which wouldn't be the case if they were deliberately removed – it looks more like the camera malfunctioned.

"Could be, although I'm not sure they have that option."

I had thought in the UK about 6-9 months ago that there was a lawsuit where Google lost, but searches only bring up a lawsuit in the USA where they won, so… meh.

Hi

I didn't know you didn't know, Doug! Every road trip for the last few years, my oldest loves to "fly" the route with me using this service.

I don't find it that helpful if navigating to someplace new. My friends from the 60s in the philippines like to "tour" their old neighborhoods with this. It is a current subject of discussion with THAT group. Kinda sad, in a way, for us to see that a lot of our houses are gone because of Pinatubo or reconstruction.

Yeah, the things that I don't know surprise even me; even though my motto is, "I know practically nothing about almost everything"….
