I got an e-mail alert yesterday from my credit card that someone in Australia had charged a pre-registration to my credit card for an ebay account at Ebay.com.au At first I thought it was a spoof as there was no dollar ammount to the charge but it was in the $1.00 USD place holder stage to verify they could draw money from the account for ebay fees. So after nearly 9 years on-line I've had my first credit card fraud. Coincidentally I had just used that card on paypal the day before the pay some sellers. none of my other accounts were affected because I don't check/use any of those on-line. Was this a coincidence??? I think NOT

Tell Paypal, your CC issuer AND the most recent sellers that you used it for. Of course it could just be someone testing a string of numbers. |

Another thing to check is whether you have some malicious software on your computer that might've logged your password, etc. Wyatt |

The CC number was posted in paypal, so I didn't have to enter it. as far as I can see there has not been any other activity on my paypal account. The most recent sellers should be fine as I aproved those charges before they closed the account. I'd have heard by now if they were not paid. I'll run the AV scan, but my AV is really pretty good. If it doesn't show anything I'll have to DL someone else's free scan test to see if there is something this one missed, but I doubt it. I am a skeptic at heart, I do not believe that paypal is as secure as they claim it to be

As far as I can see Paypal is no more secure than regular card transactions – than anything done online in fact. (NOTHING online is TRULY secure). And when something goes wrong it can be MORE hassle, not less. So they lost my vote a long time ago. Personally I never use Paypal anymore, haven't for some time. Debit and Credit cards work fine for me and are just as secure as anything can be online, especially since E-Bay and Paypal became one and the same (yet still charge you twice for their services on e-bay purchases). Paypal is very quick to slam down the doors on you when something goes wrong, and when that happens it is difficult to open them again. My card issuer moniters my card use and is very good at noticing irregularites and alerting me if something appears skewif. They are also pretty good at negotiation and will work with me torwards ammicable arrangements. That's more than Paypal will. Paypal have managed to gain a monopoly on being a middle man, by claiming it is safer/easier than just regular card transaction. But if my experiences are anything to go by, it just ain't so. |

hmmm -- I am in Australia and I just recently got contacted by the bank informing me that someone had tried a pre-reg for iTunes in the US. So I had to go through the same process of cancelling cards, getting a new card, etc. The only online use of my cards would be the various wargames suppliers -- it could be that one of the suppliers is not as secure as they believe. Alternativly, it wouldnt surprise me if someone just automated trials of dummy numbers to various known suppliers -- in my previous position at a retailer we had all sorts of creative attacks. |
