Upcoming movie about the 9th legion.

Interesting detail, speaking is a sense …

"She's quite furious because one sense is not there — she can't speak — all the others are more developed. She sees very well and hears very well: she is an animal!"

adub7406 Oct 2009 1:50 p.m. PST

"It's not meant to be historically perfect. I'm picking up on a legend and exploring it… it's an action thriller."

That will grant you no quarter here, sir.

"Speaking is a sense…"

If you run the quote down, it's from the actress; Olga Kurylenko. English isn't her native language and she's paid to be pretty.

Prediction: Evil Romans march north to destroy the peace loving proto-hippie Picts, who were driven into revolt due to Roman brutality. Roman General confronts Pictish leader (dual-sword wieldiing princess with a short-short tunic, woad, and filth as a costume), is defeated (slo-mo, so you can see the awesomeness of it), and the Romans realize they're jerks and join the proto-Hippie Picts.

Damon, no need to see the movie now!

Gorlacon?!? So I guess just when the last of the legionaries are about to be overrun, sunlight pierces through the clouds, followed by this scene YouTube link , except substitute in a mounted Centurion Primus Pilus Optimus charging at Gorlacon, after eliminating half a dozen Picts…

Marshall described the character, "Etain is kind of revenge

I rest my case …

See, the Picts are just misunderstood. Sure, they come pouring over the wall now and then, killing people, taking their livestock and stuff, slaughtering the men, violating the women and stealing babies, but I mean, who doesn't feel a like doing that once in a while? Really, under all that woad, filth and blood, they're all right.

evil grin

" Historical reenactment groups were enlisted to play Picts and Roman soldiers in the practical filming"

Fat Romans? Fat Picts? With glasses?

Gattamalata06 Oct 2009 7:05 p.m. PST

Everyone looks lean in the trailer.

I see stirrups…

MahanMan06 Oct 2009 8:28 p.m. PST

My acquaintance from college who wholeheartedly believe Arminius is the greatest figure in Western culture will love this.

Oh boy,
Xena meets the Romans and kicks their butts.

Ahhh…the good old "Eagle of the 9th" story retold at last. Lets hope they get the Picts right!

Good post. Thanks!

Are there TWO Ninth Legion movies due for 2010?

Centurion (dir Neil Marshall) link

and Eagle of the Ninth (dir Kevin MacDonald)

If I can only see one, I'll go for the one based on the Rosemary Sutcliff book.

Parts of this sound vaguely familiar:

Do Picts look like Woads?

Garand07 Oct 2009 7:33 a.m. PST

Eagle of the Ninth sounds like it will have a different focus, and might be the one to see. Centurion I have little hopes for (see the spear in Olga's hand???). The Roman gear looks good, but the rest of it…

Damon.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian07 Oct 2009 8:33 a.m. PST

Isn't it time for John the OFM to tell us that wargamers should not pass comment on movies? In this case, one we haven't actually seen.

Remember, 5%-10% of historical films are good. Good-ish.

Ah, hell. I saw 'Alexander'. I wanted that elephant to stomp on him. I saw 'King Arthur'. I saw 'Braveheart'.

1-5%, then.

Azantihighlightning07 Oct 2009 3:43 p.m. PST

The book is very good.

"It's not meant to be historically perfect. I'm picking up on a legend and exploring it… it's an action thriller."

Oh, OK then.

The trailer does raise some concernes, though.

The male lead thinks that Legio IX Hispana "…beat everybody, and beat the Spanish, and everybody…". Right: see above. No problem.

The female lead says, "It's all about fighting and riding on…" … WHAT!?!? A short, TMP-bleepable word for "ladies of the evening"? Kinky!

We'll have lots of larfs.

mweaver08 Oct 2009 6:05 p.m. PST

I will say Olga Kurylenko would probably look pretty good in pixie bondage armor.

Daffy Doug09 Oct 2009 11:33 a.m. PST

Heck yes! Sutcliffe's version for me too. *Ptooi* on that other one.

And MeroMero, you should do some "time out" for posting that link….

aecurtis Fezian10 Oct 2009 4:15 p.m. PST

Yep, that belongs in an issue of "Bound for Love" or one of its ilk.
