Drew Barrymore's heartwarming directorial debut about a small town girl (played by the pregnant Juno girl, Ellen Page) who overcomes her humble surroundings and joins a roller derby team is pure comedic gem. Equal parts 'Slapstick,' 'Bad News Bears' and 'Rocky,' 'Whip It!' is a movie you can really root for. Drew Barrymore was great as derby queen 'Smashly Simpson,' but the tip of my hat goes to Juliette Lewis (aka 'Iron Maven') who played the trashy opposing team captain with perfect malevolence. A definite charmer. |

Juliette Lewis was terrific in Cape Fear and then disappeared for quite a long time. I was going to pass on this, but that's a trio that might be too good to miss. JW |
